Biography
Adrienne Mackey is an interdisciplinary artist who delights in engaging audiences in extraordinary experiences of play. She has directed over 14 original works using non-traditional spaces and interactive frames including SURVIVE! – a 22,000 square-foot choose-your-own-adventure installation exploring humanity’s place in the universe – and Lady M, a feminist reimagining of Macbeth. Other works include The Ballad of Joe Hill at the historic Eastern State Penitentiary, which boasted a sold out FringeArts run and profile on NPR’s Radio Times, as well as Welcome To Campus, where Drexel University students narrated their experiences of higher education across a 2-mile promenade tour. Adrienne’s interest in game design has resulted in War of the Words: Philadelphia, a mobile app/site-specific theater collaboration with Drexel’s Entrepreneurial Game Studio, and The End an alternate reality game mediation on mortality. Mackey is the recipient of two Knight Arts Challenges, the first for “Outside the Black Box” –bringing theater into unexpected spaces – and “Cross Pollination,” an interdisciplinary residency program that brought 30 artists of different genres together to experiment with new creative processes.
Adrienne is also a classically trained soprano with a professional voice certificate from Roy Hart-affiliated Pan Theatre and a former lab chemist. She teaches theater for Pig Iron’s MFA in Devised Theatre and at Drexel University, has received an Independence Foundation Fellowship, a Live Arts LAB fellowship and serves as a board member for the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. She can occasionally be seen singing funk music with Johnny Showcase & the Mystic Ticket.
