Biography
Paul Bernstein combines disciplines as an actor-director-playwright, with elements of dance and film. This broad range of possibility has shaped his view of composition for stage and screen, and his perspectives on teaching. His research focuses on the purposes of revolutionary theater innovations. Coursework developed by Bernstein empowers students to work in a highly competitive field, and, to create inspired, original works. He has directed twelve main-stage productions on the campus of Rutgers-Camden. Bernstein’s cutting-edge plays and performance works have been performed at the Mark Taper Forum, the Public Theater, Manhattan Class Company, Bay Area Playwright’s Festival, HERE Arts Center, Bryant Lake Bowl, Dixon Place, HOME for Contemporary Theater, WOW Arts Center, New Dramatists, and Lincoln Center.
Paul has performed in ten countries. Highlights are available at [UPONtheOTHER.org] featuring performances at Muiderpoort Theater and de Melkweg Fontenzaal-Amsterdam, the New Grove Theater and West End Theater-London, Guggenheim Museum-Spain, Ludwig Museum of Modern Art and L1 Dance Theater-Budapest, and Bovec Arts Center-Solvenia. He recently lectured on interdisciplinary performance at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary where his works were featured in 2014. This research, “Artistic Imperatives: Merging Live Theater and Film”, was published by Common Ground Press, Chicago, and for The International Journal for Arts in Society. In 2018, he served in The Netherlands as an American Delegate for ISPA, The International Society for the Performing Arts.
In 2018, he also completed a body of American plays and performance texts, “Selected Writings: Paul Bernstein 2011-2018” consisting of four full-length plays, four one-acts, three short films, and eight solo, duet, and trio works. The plays: Night Train Duet, Chase My Wife, Lowest Common, and Hoyt Jenks: Greatest Hits, are scheduled for performance in 2019.
