Biography

James Mobley has been technical director and resident designer for the theater program since 1993.  Prior to coming to Rutgers, Jim worked professionally in various venues as technical director, including the Des Moines Metro Opera, U.C. Berkeley Repertory Theater, The Kansas City Lyric Opera, The Missouri Repertory Theater, Lakeview Theater Company, Greystone Productions of West Virginia, and Circle Repertory Theater (off Broadway, NYC). He received a Bachelor of Science in Technical Theater and Design from Northwest Missouri State University and continued his education at West Virginia University, where he completed an M.F.A. in scenic design.  His interest in theater began while he was in high school, where he was the first student scenic designer to design a main stage production (God’s Favorite) and was also a member of The International Thespian Society, Troupe 3289. While in college, Jim served in several elected offices of the honorary theater fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega, as treasurer, secretary and president.

Some awards he has received include Best Scenic Design for Little Shop of Horrors (1996 Burlington County Footlighters), Merit Award (1997 Rutgers University), Certificate of Achievement (2008-09 Princeton Premiere), Barrymore Award nomination in Design (2010 The Adrienne Theater-When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder), and a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Set Design (2013 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival – The Glass Menagerie).  At Rutgers, Jim teaches lighting design, scenic design, independent studies in design and tech. and stagecraft. He has designed and constructed scenery for more than 80 productions while at Rutgers University and has designed over 150 productions in his career.  A few of Jim’s recent works include:  A Doll’s House, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Twelve Dancing Princesses, Measure for Measure, Fuddy Meers, The Trial, and Dracula.
