Biography
Bruce Garrity’s paintings of the studio and landscape are poetic explorations of pictorial inventions. He utilizes a broad vocabulary of painterly means in the pursuit of visual pictorial drama, often in dialog with earlier artists (recently Cezanne, Matisse, Bonnard). Garrity worked as an Art Director and Illustrator before taking up teaching. He has been an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers University in Camden since 1997. He received the Sybil Cohen Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2010. Among the courses he teaches are Drawing I and II, Figure Drawing with Anatomy, Visual Fundamentals, Painting I, Intro to Studio Art, Art Appreciation, and Intro to Art History II as well as mentoring upper level painting students. In addition he has also been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Delaware, Stockton University, and Delaware College of Art and Design. In the Department he is co-sponsor of the Art Students League along with Ken Hohing, the Faculty Mentor for the Student Works Gallery, and sponsors a Saturday morning open figure drawing studio.
In addition to his painting and teaching Garrity has been an active curator. He has curated a number of exhibitions and symposia at the Stedman Gallery including: “To Be or Not to Be” a Painter and Seeing Voices: The Visual Voice (in collaboration with Prof. Margery Amdur), Working Drawing, and Dark Eye Glances: Romantic Impulse in Landscape (with Noreen Scott-Garrity). These exhibition/symposia allow students to engage with regional, national and international artists and their work on the Camden campus.
