This week, the spotlight shines on Joey Lebron for another feature on Friday! Joey is a music major with a concentration in Composition/Music Technology! For Joey, choosing his major was almost too easy. He has been making music since he was 12 years old and has always loved playing music, both by himself and in groups. In his time here at Rutgers, he has had the opportunity to direct 3 different shows in the Walter K. Gordon Theater. He has directed 2 concerts for the RU Project Band as a freshman and sophomore. This year, as part of Joey’s independent study with Dr. Julianne Baird, he is directing Proof of Concept. This concert is special to Joey because he had a lot more creative freedom with this concert than he did directing the other two. Joey has been really inspired by Prof. Jojo Streater, who encouraged him to help direct his first concert as a freshman. When composing music, Joey draws a lot of inspiration from popular artists and bands like Pink Floyd and Mk.gee.

It’s a new student feature! This week, we get to feature Serenity Rivera! Serenity is a dual major in Art Therapy and Psychology, graduating in May of 2026. She chose her majors because 2 of her biggest goals in life are to help people and be connected with her art, so choosing Art Therapy and Psychology were the best of both worlds. She learned about art therapy as a major in high school. One of her teachers told her about it, since high school was when she really started getting into her art. Serenity has been most inspired by Prof. Margery Amdur and Prof. Stass Shpanin because of how they both pushed her to do more than what she thought she could do with her art. Part of what makes Serenity and her artwork stand out is the amount of emotion that is in each piece she creates. Each work has a different level of emotion that can be felt by the people looking at her work because she fuels her work with the emotions that she is feeling. We can’t wait to see where her art works take her, and we hope that she is successful in helping in her goals in life!

It’s Faculty Feature Friday! This week, we get to highlight Prof. Millie Hiibel! Prof. Hiibel is a costume designer who was originally from Northern Nevada before moving to New Jersey. She has her BA in English Literature from the University of Washington, Seattle, and her MFA in Theater Design from Temple University. Prof. Hiibel has quite a few accomplishments, including receiving an Independence Foundation Fellowship, being nominated for the Barrymore Awards, being part of the off-Broadway show I Love You Because, and being part of Opera Philadelphia for 14 years now. She has designed and made the costumes for different shows here on campus, but one of her favorites so far were the costumes she made for Much Ado About Nothing. We are so excited to see what designs she comes up with for any productions we have here at Rutgers–Camden!
