It’s time for another Student Feature Friday! This week, we are excited to feature Lucy Rowe! She is a senior set to graduate at the end of this semester ‘25, majoring in Natural Sciences in Narrative and Image, which is one that she was able to curate with the help of her advisor. When making her major, Lucy “wanted as full of an experience from each thing without giving one up for another.” She ultimately wants to work with people, and this allows her to have many different avenues of communication, which is important for her. One of her favorite classes during her time here at Rutgers–Camden was her Drawing 2 class with Prof. Stass Shpanin. She feels that the class taught her to learn differently and changed her view on education. The class also introduced her to our Fine Arts Program and made her realize that she wanted to continue taking Fine Arts classes. This year, Lucy had some of her artwork displayed at one of her first gallery shows. Her work entered the William Way Gallery for their 3rd Art Student Biennial. She was also awarded an environmental stewardship internship, which has been one of her favorite jobs so far. Lucy says that her art “creates a new lens that distorts photographs of the male body in an uncomfortably vulnerable way,” which makes her art stand out. She strives to successfully translate her ideas onto her canvases in a way that can be read by other people with each piece she creates.

Happy Feature Friday! Today, we are featuring Prof. Daniel Ostrov! He is a sculpting teacher here at Rutgers-Camden, but he also teaches at other schools and continues to create astonishing works of art in his time. Prof. Ostrov was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and lived in New Orleans before moving to the East Falls in Philadelphia. He also has a few degrees, including his Bachelor`s in Fine Arts and Classical Studies and his Master`s in Glass from the Tyler School of Art. Prof. Ostrov is skilled in many different sculpting mediums, some of which include glass, wood, clay and metal. One of his favorite pieces that he has done so far is his piece called Koan. It`s a piece that he made out of wood and is currently suspended in the John Phillip Sousa House in Philly. While that was his favorite piece, one of his other pieces, the Knotted Grotto, was blessed by Pope Francis XVI. Prof. Ostrov views this as one of his most significant accomplishments. More of his works are displayed in different museums and buildings across Philadelphia, such as the James Michener Museum and the John Philip Sousa House. In the future, Prof. Ostrov hopes to make a series of sculptures floating in water.
