The arts programs at Rutgers–Camden offer a flexible range of opportunities for students to explore an education in visual arts, art history/museum studies, and performing arts in music and theater. These programs teach technical, academic, creative, and communication skills as part of our curriculum in Animation, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Art History, Music, Theater, and Filmmaking majors and concentrations.

Today’s Faculty Feature highlights Dr. Julianne Baird. Prof. Baird was born in North Carolina and raised on a farm in the Appalachian Mountains, growing up with what she describes as a “Southern Gothic upbringing.” She now lives across the bridge in Philadelphia. Prof. Baird holds an MA in Musicology from Eastman School of Music, a diploma from the Salzburg, Austria Mozarteum, and a Ph.D in Musicology from Stanford University. Known for her incredibly fast coloratura, a type of fast, high and light singing in the Baroque field, she is considered one of the top singers in early Baroque music in the United States. Some of her most notable achievements are winning the Vera Award for excellence in achievement in the field of Classical Singing, receiving a Musica Sacra Lifetime Achievement Award, and being a lifetime member of the American Academy of Voice Teachers. Prof. Baird is one of the most recorded sopranos with around 120 solo CDs. She has collaborated with Meryl Streep, whom she considers her all-time favorite actress. Prof. Baird credits Erich Schwandt, a Canadian musicologist, with inspiring her and for “teaching me how to trill.” Prof. Baird loves learning new languages, traveling to places like Austria and Italy, and is a captivating storyteller. She enjoys gianduja ice cream and loves her cat Pantera. 🐈‍⬛ 🍨
